I found out my roommate got a staph infection? What should I do?

We live in INCREDIBLY close quarters, the apartment is tiny and everything gets touched by everything. I wouldn't even know where to begin and he's had it for some time apparently and just found out what it was a few days ago. Should I get on a preventitive antibiotic or what do I do? Even if I try to clean the place up, he'll be walking around just touch all the stuff again, couches, floors, the bathroom, etc.

its a boil on his hand. i've touched tons of things that I'm sure he's touched, but I feel fine - for now.

Just because your roommate got a staph infection doesn't mean you will get one. Staphylococcus aureus is a common bacterium that is found on the skin surface. Some strains are more virulent than others, and some people are more susceptible to infection than others. I agree with my fellow answerer that it is a good idea to clean everything he touches with bleach. Wearing a face mask and wearing vinyl gloves may give you some peace of mind. Don't use any antibiotics unless you are infected as this will encourage the development of antibiotic resistant bacteria.

Bleach clean everything and wash your hands with anti bacterial hand soap and wash sheets/clothing separate from his. You can get a nose swab to see if you got it. You need to be careful till his infection is gone. If you do get something that looks like a spider bite go to the Dr. right away and get it looked at, that is how it started out with one of my neighbors and it ended up being MRSA ( a type of staph).

It depends on where the staff infection is. If it is in a draining wound then you would only be at risk if you came in contact with the actual drainage. I need to know where the staff infection is.
