You need a common denominator to add the fractions....

3/5 and 7/15, the common denom is 15.

3/5 = (3/5)(3/3) = 9/15

So, now you have

1 9/15 - (-2 7/15)
= 1 9/15 + 2 7/15
= (1 + 2) and (9/15 + 7/15)
= 3 and (16/15)
= 3 and (1 1/15)
= 4 1/15

= 1 3/5 - (- 2 7/15)
= 8/5 - (- 37/15)
= 24/15 + 37/15
= 61/15
= 4 1/15

1 3/5 - (-2 7/15) = (1+2) + (9/15 -- 7/15) = 3 2/15

1 + 2 + 9/15 + 7/15
3 + 16/15
3 + 1 + 1/15
4 1/15

= 61/15

61/15
the 2 minus sign together is a plus sign.
So, just add both fractions and you get 61/15 or 4 1/15

(3/5) * 3 gives it a like denominator to 15 and so have to multiply the top and bottom by 3 to get 9/15

subtracting a negative is the same as adding...so you have

1 9/15+ 2 7/15= 3 16/15= 4 1/15
2008-08-20 10:35 pm
1 3/5 - (-2 7/15)
= 1 3/5 + 2 7/15
= (1 + 2) + (3/5 + 7/15)
= 3 + (9/15 + 7/15)
= 3 + 16/15
= 3 16/15
= (3 + 1) (16 - 15)/15
= 4 1/15
