AL Chem: charge density and polarity

2008-08-21 3:09 am
Q1:What is the definition of charge density?
Q2:How does the high charge density of the cation contribute to the distortion of electron cloud, so polarization would be carried out?
Q3:How can the great polarization of the bond contribute to the lowering of experimentally determined covalent bond length?

Thx a lot ^^

1. Electrical charge per unit volume.
2. High charge density of the cation attracts the negatively charged electron cloud of the anion to the cation's side, so the nucleus of the anion is no longer shielded by the electron cloud. Polarization hence develops.
3. Polarization helps attract the atoms of the molecule closer together so the covalent bond length should be shorter.
