18. Roulette and intuition. An American roulette wheel has 38 slots, of which 18 are red, 18 are black, and 2 are green (0 and 00). If you spin the wheel 38 times,
a) Intuitively, how many times would you expect the ball to wind up in a green slot?
b) Use the formula for expected value to verify your intuition.

Please show me the steps...thanks!!!

For a: I would expect the ball to wind up in a green slot at least twice in 38 times.

For b: The expected value represents the average amount one "expects" as the outcome of the random trial when identical odds are repeated many times.

For the first time, the chances of the ball landing in a green slot are 2/38. The second time, the chances are 2/38 + 2/38. The third time, the chances are 2/38 + 2/38 + 2/38.

Over 38 times, you would add up to 76/38 or 200% chance. So, I would expect the ball to wind up in a green slot at least twice for 38 times.

Having taken a number of university level statistics courses, I would tend to question any statistical results posted anywhere. There are so many vairables that for the most part, statistics are irrelevant in serving as an accurate predictor of much of anything. BB, Raji the Green Witch
