1. Mr Lee bought a watch when he visitede Japan. When he came back, he
sold it to Mr Chan and made a profit of 20%. Mr Chan then sold it to Miss Wong and made a profit of 15%. If Mr Chan got a profit of $90,
a) how much did Mr Chan pay for the watch?
b) how much did Mr Lee pay for the watch?

2. The marked price of a Hi Fi is $5000. If you pay in cash, you will have a
10% discount. If you pay hy instalment , you have to pay 15% as down
payment and $400 each month for 12 months.
a) How much do you pay if you pay in cash?
b) How much do you pay if you pay if you pay by instalment?
c) Find the percentage that you have to pay more by instalment than in
.cash

1) a)
Mr Chan pay for the watch
= $90 / 15%
= $90 / 0.15
= $600

∴ Mr Chan pay $600 for the watch.

1) b)
Mr Lee pay for the watch
= $600 / (1 + 20%)
= $600 / 1.2
= $500

∴ Mr Lee pay $500 for the watch.

2) a)
pay in cash
= $5000 (1 - 10%)
= $5000 (90%)
= $4500

∴ if you pay in cash, you will pay $4500.

2) b)
pay by instalment
= $5000 (15%) + $400 (12months)
= $750 + $4800
= $5550

∴ if you pay by instalment, you will pay $5550.

2) c)
percentage
= [ ($5550 - $4500) / $4500 ] * 100%
= 23.33%

you have to pay 23.33% more by instalment than in cash.
