5. In justifying his choice of a model, a student wrote, “I know this is the correct model because R2 = 99.4%.”
a) Is this reasoning correct? Explain.
b) Does this model allow the student to make accurate predictions? Explain.

a) ANSWER: Yes! Reasoning is correct.
Why??
The coefficient of determination is a measure of the relative amount of variability in the data that is accounted for by L-S (least squares) line. The closer the data is to the L-S line the smaller the SSResid sum will be and the value of r2 will be closer to 1. Note that 0 ≤ r2 ≤ 1. Note: coefficient of determination = (correlation coefficient)

b) ANSWER: Yes! Model allows accurate predictions within range of data and within specified confidence interval.
