Scientific notation is written as: a * 10^x, where a is greater than 0 and less than 10, and x is an integer (i.e. -2,-1,0,1,2,...).
1) 36,000,000= 3.6 * 10^7
I moved the decimal point from the right end of the number 7 places to the left to produce 3.6. Now since I moved the decimal 7 places to the left, this means that I must multiply 3.6 by 10^7 to get 36,000,000. You can see that the number of times I move the decimal place over to the left corresponds to the power that 10 is raised to.
2) 67,000,000=6.7 * 10^7
3)93,000,000=9.3*10^7
4)141,000,000=1.41*10^8
5)484,000,000=4.84*10^8
6)887,000,000=8.87*10^8
7)1,800,000,000=1.8*10^9
8)2,800,000,000=2.8*10^9
9)3,600,000,000=3.6*10^9

I'll show you how with the first one. You have 36,000,000. For scientific notation you want just one digit to the left of the decimal point. So in this example you would want 3.6. Now you have to figure out how many times to multiply this by 10 to get 36,000,000. So, just on scratch paper stick the decimal point where you want it: 3.6,000,000 and now count how many digits to the right to move that decimal point to get it to the end of the number. You have to move it past 6 and then all the zeros, a total of 7 digits.

So you would have to multiply by 10 seven times to turn 3.6 into 36,000,000.

Therefore: 36,000,000 = 3.6 x 10^7

That's it!

The distance between the sun and Mercury is approximately: 3.6 x 10^7 miles .

The distance between the sun and Venus is approximately 6.7 x 10^7 miles

...and so on. its always a number less than 10 multiplied by 10 to some power. Check the number of times the decimal point will have to be moved.

Keep moving the decimal point to the left until there is only one digit to the left of it. Count the number of moves, and stick it on top of the 10. You'll end up with 3.6 x 10^ something.
