Aspirin(亞斯匹靈)

Long time ago , doctors usually asked patients to chew willow barks to reduce the pain caused by illnesses . Can willow barks really reduce pain ?
In the 19th century , scientists discovered that willows contain a special ingredient - salicylic acid (水楊酸) , which can reduce pain and cure fever. However, the acid has some side effects.
In1853, Gerhardt , a French scientist , tried to mix salicylic acid with another chemical. Although the product was very time-consuming .
41 years later , Felix Hoffman , a German chemist , was looking for a way to relieve his father's pain brought about by arthritis . He found Gerhardt's report about salicylic acid in the laboratory and studied it carefully . It is he who discovered
acetylsalicylic acid (乙水楊酸)-the ingredient in aspirin.
Gerhardt gave up his experiment because he thought that his discovery was of no importance. If he were still alive today, he would be surprised to see that there is a huge demand for aspirin nowadays-world .
Now, scientists are still studying if aspirin has other uses . They hope that aspirin can prevent heart diseases, strokes ,the deterioration of cataracts , or even tumours and diabetes.
