Guessing that the a's are meant to be on the bottom of the fraction, if not, please supply with additional parenthesis to be more specific:

3 / (2a) - 5 / (6a)

LCD here is 6a:

9 / (6a) - 5 / (6a)

Subtract the numerators:

4 / (6a)

Can be reduced to:

2 / (3a)

= 3/2a - 5/6a
= 9/6a - 5/6a
= 4/6a
= 2/3a

Answer: 2/3a

Checking (going back to 3/2a):
= 2/3a + 5/6a
= 4/6a + 5/6a
= 9/6a
= 3/2a

3/2a - 5/6a
= 3(3)/3(2a) - 5/3(2a)
= (9 - 5)/3(2a)
= 4/3(2a) (divide 2 & 4 by 2)
= 2/3a

As written, your question COULD be read as :-
3 / (2a) - 5 / (6a)

Questions must be presented properly :-

(3/2) a - (5/6) a
(9/6) a - (5/6) a
(4/6) a
(2/3) a

3/2a - 5/6a equals 9/6a - 5/6a equals 4/6a which can be simplified to 2/3a

Man I learnt that half my life ago..lol

3/2a= 9/6a-5/6a= 4/6a= 2/3a
2008-08-11 7:28 am
5/6a
[what am i answering?]
2008-08-11 7:27 am
a = 15/6
2008-08-11 7:27 am
3/2a - 5/6a = 9/6a - 5/6a
= 4/6a
