And they don't even have their own national flag other than the Olympic flag they are carrying.

The People's Republic of China (PRC) does not recognize Taiwan (officially known as the Republic of China) as a separate country. PRC / mainland China considers Taiwan to be part of their country. The PRC government has encouraged many organizations to refer to to Taiwan as "Chinese Taipei".

I know, it is unfair, isn't it?

It's a compromise, and like all compromises, no one gets exactly what they want.

China has never officially recognized Taiwan as an independent country, though they tolerate them acting as a separate country. The difference between Taiwan and Tibet is that Taiwan is recognized and supported as a separate country by most other countries in the world, Tibet is not, so Tibet does not get recognized as a country by the International Olympic Committee.

Here's irony for you. Hong Kong, a province of China, actually walked during the opening ceremony with their flag. Taiwan, not a province of China, weren't allowed to carry their flag.

China prides itself in being average and boasted how all they people during the opening ceremony were from average families and were average themselves. Yet had that little girl who "sang" in the opening actually lip sing to another girl hiding behind the curtains. Why? Because she wasn't pretty enough. You mean she was average looking and that wasn't good enough for a country who prides itself on being average?

Another point, China asked everyone to leave politics out of the olympics, but only after they jailed 10 thousand tibetan monks to be released after the olympics.

Don't forget the ban on serving Mongols, blacks, and other undesirables from the bar. Below the link says, "may be inaccurate" but i'm pretty sure I know who's flagging that as "inaccurate". You can find it within other articles from other news sources, but none made the headlines in major newspapers. They were only mentioned in passing in random articles.

So why is Taiwan called Chinese Taipei? Because they're bullies that will do anything do make themselves look better.

If you studied any Chinese language or history, Taiwan was regarded more of a "county" or "state" by the Chinese. It was not until after the Japanese invaded that Taiwan became it's own country.
The Chinese government's biggest goal is to return Taiwan to China.

Since Taiwan doesn't want to return, China has been trying other approaches such as "pretend Taiwan is still apart of China" schemes and hope that the people will just slowly call themselves Chinese once again.

Of course in other parts of the world no one cares and Everyone asian is called Chinese.

What's even worse is that I'm in Taiwan and they aren't even showing the olympics on TV!

Well - they do have news updates but hardly no live events!

Taiwan is actually a country with it's own government, currency, flag, language (Taiwanese), army and so on...

It's just that big brother China gets upset when anyone mentions this, if Taiwan use their 'real' name in the olympics then China will probably start attacking them straight away...

Alot of people think China may invade Taiwan just after the niceties of the olympics have finished anyway - I really hope not though.

Hoju Saram: it's funny that you said you live in China yet you know nothing about Taiwan.
They are not allowed to use the name Taiwan? ridiculous! Taiwan is the name of the island, Taipei is just a province, (of China, or of Taiwan, whatever). I don't think I have the right to judge politics.

Taiwan is disputed by China the way Tibet is. China considers Taiwan part of China. In order to participate Taiwan has probably had to make adjustments.

wtf china sux
all they want is power
look wat they did to tibet
they squashed the monks with thier tanks
this is so aweful
i cant believe the taiwanese government isnt doing anything about it
its cause of the new election

so listen to whatever they say
This is so unfair Stupid Communists

They are referred to as "Chinese Taipei" because the Chinese (mainland) government considers Taiwan to be part of China and refuses at all costs to allow them to have independance. They have missiles pointing at the island in case Taiwan says they want to be free.

Taiwan has it's own goverenment but the Chinese mainland government does not recognise them and they have NEVER met each other. It's only every representatives that meet.

They are not allowed to use the name Taiwan. They also CAN NOT have embassies anywhere in the world. Any country that does will be boycotted by China. If you notice the wordings in countries for the Taiwan embassies they don't say embassy. You get visas from there but it can not be called an embassy as that would imply Taiwan is a different country.

It's very political and doesn't look like being resolved for a long time. A bloody resolution is more likely than a peaceful one.

Taiwan is different from Tibet.

Taiwan's recognized father of their nation whose name is Sun Zhongshan is a Chinese born in Guangdong Province.
He agrees on Capitalism but due to the time his revolution took place is not as excellent as Mao Zedong's leading Communism.

Like the American Civil War, the 2 parties fight and Communism's party win in the war and all the members of Sun Zhongshan's parties evacuated to Taiwan.
In fact Taiwan does not have its own religion or long history as a nation at all. Just who wins the war, who rules China now.

Taiwanese I think do not really hate China that much, many of them also have good relations and relatives in China! It is just a matter of different views of Politic nowadays. And they are really Chinese with same culture until they move to Taiwan. Taiwanese also do not have their own language, the so regarded Taiwanese by themselves is just an accent of Chinese.

What's more, the characters used in Taiwan is Chinese!
Just we in Mainland use the simplified Chinese.
This can be seen easily since on all sorts of websites and software, you can find out 2 types of Chinese easily.

I think the tension between China and Taiwan is just so so. At least we Chinese people are intellectual towards this problem.

Now it is just a politic war of attrition between Chinese in China mainland and Taiwan.

Taiwan is a renegade state, and is still widely regarded as part of China.

Simple, because Taiwan is a part of Chinese. Precisely, Taiwan is one of Chinese Province. And therefore.
