If you divide a unit by itself, then just like a variable, it cancels out.
For example:
5 m / m = 5
So cancel out the m³, but you don't want to change the value. One meter is equal to 100 cm, so to convert each of the meters, you would do:
1 m³ ( 100 cm / m ) ( 100 cm / m ) ( 100 cm / m )
Note that 100cm/m is equal to 1 because the numerator equals the denominator: 100 centimeters = 1 meter. You would actually read 100cm/m as "one hundred centimeters per meter".
Make sure that m is on the bottom so it cancels out the m that is originally there.
The long line above can be simplified by:
= 1 m³ ( 100 cm / m )³
Then just solve:
= 1 m³ ( 100³ cm³ / m³ )
= 1 ( 100³ cm³ / 1 )
= 1·100³ cm³
= 1000000 cm³

Same idea for the other one:
35 mm²
= 35 mm² ( (1cm) / (10mm) )²
= 35 mm² (1² cm²) / (10² mm²)
= 35 (cm²) / (10²)
= 0.35 cm²

5000 m³
5000 m³ ( 1000m/km )³
... What's the problem there?
Notice how m is on the top. That means it won't cancel out the m³ in the problem.
Instead, do:
= 5000 m³ ( km/ (1000m) )³
Now meters are on the bottom, and they will cancel out the original m³.
= 5000 m³ ( km³ ) / ( 1000³ m³)
= 5000 ( km³ ) / ( 1000³ )
= 5 ( km³ ) / ( 1000² )
= 0.005 ( km³ ) / ( 1000 )
= 0.000005 km³
