or office?

Good evening/ afternoon,

Generally speaking, both architects and interior designers are working for the design of buildings and the space.

Interior design deals more with the interior space, colour, lighting, mood, choice of materials and furnitures.

Architects deals with the building as a whole, from the conceptual design, exterior, and interior in many cases, to carrying out the construction, dealing with the legal issues involved in a project (e.g. land use) and cooperation with other professionals necessary for the completion and functioning of the building.

Architecture evolves a lot over time. Traditionally speaking, many schools take interior design as a discipline within architecture. However, as building projects become more and more complex, and more considerations have to be taken, e.g. alleviating pollution, it is simply too complicated to deal with all the things altogether. Therefore, nowadays an architect may or may not deal with the interior design of the building space, and it depends on the contract with the clients. Interior design itself, in many countries, like the US and Canada, may take the form of a separate degree. Obviously, if a person takes interior design only, he or she cannot become an architect.

If you wish to deal with the interior space and make a beautiful home/ shop/ hotel interior for the clients, you may take interior design and enjoy it.

If you wish to deal with the design of a whole building, you may take architecture.

If you want to build an airport, a big ambition indeed, or involved in it, the design is exactly the work of an architect, or a civil engineer.

Please note that a project takes in the cooperation of many disciplines, e.g. structural, fire, electrical and mechanical engineering. No single person can plan and do all.

From your words it is clear that you are having some initial interests and you are at the stage of making a choice.

A very important point to note is that the training of architects takes at least 7 years in university, longer than many other disciplines. You have to know about this.

I have no intention to make comment on any schools you mentioned here.

If you have interest, you may want to ask for more advice from seniors, and visit Norman Foster who planed the HKIA project.

Please enjoy in your desire for creation work.
