x^2 + 4x - 1= x^2 + 4x + (4 - 4) -1
= ( x^2 + 4x +2^2) -4 -1
= ( x^2 + 4x +2^2) - 5
= ( x + 2 ) ^2 - 5
therefore p = +2 , q = -5
