孝顺的厨子
-《堂吉克德》台湾版译者前言

语文的区别，常成为文学作品和读者之间的隔阂。语言文字的隔阂可由翻译打通，例如西班牙语的文学名著《堂吉克德》译成中文，就能供我们中国人欣赏领略。好比 “江上之清风，山间之明月”是人我之“所共适”。这里的“人”之西班牙语言的人，“我”指同说汉语的咱们自己人。台湾和大陆相隔一个海峡，两岸都是一家，无分彼此，何妨“我的就是你的，你的就是我的”呢！
翻译是一项苦差事，我曾比之于“一仆二主”。译者同时得伺候两个主子。一个洋主子是原文作品。原文的一句句、一字字都要求依顺，不容违拗，也不得敷衍了事。另一个主子是本国译本的读者。他们要求看到原作的本来面貌，却又得依顺他们的语文习惯。我作为译者，对“洋主子”尽责，只是为了对本国读者尽忠。我对自己译本的读者，恰如俗语所称“孝顺的厨子”，主人越吃得多，或者吃的主人越多，我就越发称心惬意，觉得苦差没有白当，辛苦一场也是值得。现在台湾联经出版公司 要出版拙译《堂吉克德》的精印本，真是由衷喜悦。

more gratifying am satisfied, thought the hard and unprofitable task
works as not in vain, laborious also is worth. Now the Taiwan
association needs to publish clumsily translates "Hall Jack Germany"
the fine printed book after the publication company, really is
heartfelt is joyful.
