According to the expert of the China National Observatory Department, the recent snow storms covering vast area of China should be related to the La Nina phenomenon which made the surrounding atmospheric current abnormal. Starting from January the atmospheric current has affected the area for a long period which resulted in a frequent movement of the cold air, while at the same time the sub-tropical high pressure tended to be strong, especially in the south tip. The warm and wet air originated from the south confronted with the cold air from the north in the Yangtze River , which led to heavy rainfall in the area. The stable atmospheric current made a continuous snowy weather, and resulted at this huge snow storm disaster.
A meteorology expert stated that the continuous low temperature in the area on the southern part of Guangdong Province and vicinity has close relationship with the La Nina phenomenon and the strange atmospheric current. The expert pointed out that on top of the Asian-European area situated in the medium-high latitude, a blocking high pressure had been developed in the recent few months, which blocked the movement of the atmospheric current and led to continuing invasion of cold air from the north into China . At the same time while the cold air was moving down to China , the warm and high humidity air from Southeast Asia still being transferred to southern part of China . The cold and warm current fused in the area of Guangdong Province and its vicinity and south of Yangtze River , and finally caused the unusual long and huge area low temperature with snow storm.
