There is a grammatical problem with the question. If it should read:
4x+8y = 40-8x
y = 22
then we can simply insert the second equation into the first to get:
4x + 176 = 40-8x, or 12x = - 136, or x = 11.3333

sorry but you need to repost, is there a sign in between 4x and 8y, because if there isnt than the problem makes no sense.
