兩樣東西若被視為一體，就要用單數形動詞，如：
Bread and butter was what we had for breakfast.（我們早餐吃的是塗牛油麵包）
而若兩樣東西若看為是分開的東西，則要用複數形動詞，如：
Bread and butter are sold in the supermarket.（牛油和麵包在超市發售）
但water and air好像難以視為一體，所以可以用are
