concentrated HNO3 can react with both Cu & Ag4HNO3 + Cu → Cu(NO3)2 + 2NO2 + 2H2O
2HNO3 + Ag → AgNO3 + NO2 + H2O
acid used is in excess, alloy dissolves completely
Cu2+(aq) is blue, a blue solution is formed
