When I set the iphone horizontally, shouldn't the icons/screen change?

When I put my iphone on the desk horizontally, should the icons/keyboard/ buttons change to fit the screen? My phone wont. or they will only turn in certain setting? I got the Iphone 1st gen 8gb. 1.14 fireware.

the iphone screen only changes horizontally when you are doing certain tasks on it.. like viewing photos, listening to itunes, youtube, on a website.
the main screen and things like the calender, email etc. will not flip around.
