I was a chef in a chinese restaurant many moons ago, and the female employees always used to call me "Quay Jai". I'm not sure whether I spelled it correctly, but if you speak Chinese I'm sure you can figure it out.

Take it easy."Gwai zai" should be what they said. They usually refer any white people as "gwai " with nothing bad. "gwai" now often means "smart; very, or foreign" in Cantonese-speaking areas.
zai means boy/young guy.
The famous Australian actor, who can speak Cantonese in Hong Kong, calls himself "Gwai lou" with proud.

I think they may have been calling you "gwai jiy" which crudely translates as 'ghost (white) boy'. It's a pretty common term or nickname Cantonese-speakers use for westerners.

I've heard Cantonese refer to westerners as 鬼佬 gwai lo (or gui lao in Mandarin but it isn't really used on mainland)
