I strongly support the Macao Government to import foreign labour into Macao under well-planned rules and regulations. The foreign labour has greatly contributed to the development of Macao in recent years. However illegal foreign labour and labour who is not performing the job they are allowed to do have also threaten the survival of local labour.
Due to the relatively low educational level of Macao people in general, the local residences are comparatively less competitive. Some of them even blame on other people or factor instead of enhancing their own competitiveness. On the Contrary the foreign labour is using their best effort to learn Cantonese, which makes me as one of the Macao people feeling shameful !
While we are facing the competition of globalization, import of foreign labour is an unchangeable fact. But if all the fundamental works have to be supported by import labour unlimitedly, the Government should treat it as a crucial labour policy problem.
I do not think that Macao lacks talented people. The only reason why we are losing these talented people is because the Government has leaned over too much to the development of the gambling business so many talented people have turned their eyes to the open world. In any case it is due to the lack of monitoring system and related policy in the Government’s end that makes the “over-flooding” of foreign labour.
In Chinese we have a proverb that says : When the water can make a boat float, it can also make a boat sink. Our most important challenge right away is to determine how to control the foreign labour so that it will not become the water that sinks this boat ! Let us stop complaining about the foreign labour. As local Macao people we should also examine ourselves and increase our own competitiveness, so that we can get back our fair share !
