I don't know about there, but here in the US, if a car is left on then highway long enough, local authorities will simply have it towed. After its towed, the owner is sent a letter to come pick it up. If it's not picked up by such and such time, it is usually just scraped or sold at an auction.

If you just leave it on the side of the road, it will eventually be towed and stored. That means some tow company will be out the time and expense to clean up after you, and will use the VIN to find and bill you for their trouble.

It's far better if you are leaving a vehicle forever to at least call the police and tell them where it's at. Leave the key in the ignition (makes it easier for the tow company) and it you want to be extra nice, leave the signed title in the glove box so they won't have to do all the work to get a title. Chances are if you do that, you won't get billed, they will just recycle it.

Of course, if you have any road side assistance program, call them, and tell them when they arrive that you don't want it, and they will take it from there.
