I read in Wikipedia that it's illegal in California to possess and sell companion animal meat (uh, pigs can be companion animals??) but what is the legality of eating dog meat in other states? Just to be clear, I have no desire to eat or sell dog meat!! I think eating dogs is gross but I am just a bit curious about what exactly the legality is..
Say my beloved dog got hit by a car and he died. If I say, oh well, shame to let the meat go to waste and barbequed it.. could I be arrested and what would be the punishment? There was no cruelty involved. The dogs death was completely accidental and witnesses can testify that the dog's death was accidental.

I'm pretty sure it isn't legal just because of sanitary issues. Also there are animal testing right laws, so it makes sense. Not to sound rude, but your scenario of bbq-ing the meat of your beloved dog that got hit by a car, is a little unethical. Especially because if a dog was hit by a car, it's insides would be splattered across the pavement, and exposed to an array of other harmful unsanitary threats. Some people do eat dog meat in places like Indonesia and other foreign countries, but in California if one is to eat their own dog's meat it can be found as an act of cruelty.
I understand that it was a curious metaphorical question, but it is illegal. It is also almost as much as an oxymoron that it's illegal to commit suicide.
Who would want to eat their dog anyways?

Eating dog meat is same like eating their fathers. They consider dogs are their best friends and pets lol. Killing a cow is nothing but killing a dog is an animal cruelty. I disgust those hypocrites with all kind words.

Generally, illegal, but every state will have some specific law that outlaws it and defines just what a "companion animal" might be.

don't know, everything's illegal anymore, the government is out of control and cant cut a fart. All laws are now made to drive political gain, not to help the people. it doesn't taste too bad as prepared in south east china though, I can tell you. id say if you really want to try it go to China or go buy a dog, kill it humanely and cook it up. Who's gonna know? I broke the speed limit the past 5000 days in a row, no issues.
