Back the US supported (primarily) a group called Northern Alliance against the USSR.

However, Northern Alliance turned out to be a bad (bad in a sense of brutal and did not obey the US) group.

So by 1996, the US supported the Taliban to overthrow the Northern Alliance.

Yet, in the 2003 invasion, the US re- supported the Northern Alliance to fight the Taliban........

So not all Afghans supported and trained by the US turned out to be terrorists.
