6x+5y=-16

-6x+y=40

add the 2 equations
6y = 24
y = 4

substitute in the first equation to find x
6x+5y=-16
6x + 5(4)= -16
6x + 20 = -16
6x = -16-20
6x = -36
x= -6

(x,y)= (-6,4)

Adding gives :-
6y = 24
y = 4

6x + 20 = - 16
6x = - 36
x = - 6

x = - 6 , y = 4
2008-07-01 6:36 pm
6x + 5y = -16
-6x + y = 40

-6x + y = 40
y = 40 + 6x
5y = 5(40 + 6x)

6x + 5y = -16
6x + 5(40 + 6x) = -16
6x + 200 + 30x = -16
6x + 30x = -16 - 200
36x = -216
x = -216/36
x = -6

-6x + y = 40
-6(-6) + y = 40
36 + y = 40
y = 40 - 36
y = 4

∴ x = -6 , y = 4

First, add them:

6x + 5y = -16
-6x + y = 40
_____________
6y = 24
y = 24/6
thereofre:
y = 6
------------------------------------------------------------------------------
By substitution, you can get the value of x:

6x + 5y = -16
6x + 5(4) = -16
6x + 20 = -16
6x = -16 - 20 (remember that in transposition,
change the sign of the number)
6x = -36
x = -36/6
therefore:
x = -6

========================================

To check:

6(-6) + 5(4) = -16
-36 +20 = -16
-16 = -16

Manipulating the second equation, y = 40 + 6x. When we substiute this on the first equaion, we get: 6x + 5(40 + 6x) = -16. Simplifying further we'll arrive at 12x = -216. Dividing both sides by 12, we have x = 18. Replacing x by 1 on either equation, we'll have y = 148.

Hi, add them together

6y = 24
y = 4

6x + 20 = -16
6x = -36
x= -6

Oops, by sub. LOL glad I can read!
Solve eq. 1 for x

6x = -16-5y
Now, plug into equation 2

-(-16-5y) = 40-y
16 + 5y = 40 - y
16 - 40 = -y - 5y
-24 = -6y
y = 4

Plug back into original equation.
6x = -16 - 20
6x = -36
x= -6

(-6, 4)
