1. Is Canada an independent country or a British overseas territory?
If it is a completely independent country, why is Queen Elizabeth II still the head of the state?

2. I don't mean to offend Canadians but are they proud of the fact that Canada was a British colony?

3. When did Canadians begin to think they're Canadians rather than British overseas citizens?

1. An independent country which was once owned by Britain. Queen Elizabeth is just a figurehead, she doesn't run anything.

2. Since Britain owned half the world at one time, the fact they once owned Canada doesn't make people proud or not proud. They don't consider it relevant.

3. They always thought of themselves as Canadians. Just as Australians always thought of themselves as Australians.

Yes Canada is an independent country, it governs itself and has a Prime Minister as the leader.
The Queen of England is merely a figure head, she has nothing to do with running Canada. In order to understand this concept...look at Canada as the Child of Britain, that has grown up and now has their own family.Canada is still considered part of the British Commonwealth. Canadians have seen themselves as a "Canadian" since they became the Dominion of Canada (1867) never a British overseas citizen...what ever that is.

Whether or not the British Monarchy has any power in Canada, figurehead or dictator, she's scum and I don't appreciate the "purple blood" ruling my homeland, I am totally against monarchies, and believe that we should abolish it so that we can have a REAL democracy.

The Queen does have influence in Canada. We have the governor-general who, as her representative, lives exceedingly well. There is great respect for the Queen. She is still on our money British influence still lies in Canada.

I'm a Canadian and I'm proud that we were once part of an empire as grand as Britannia.

After WWI, Canadians began to foster a sense of independence, as they fought on their own regiment, rather than as part of British forces. We didn't adopt the Canadian flag until recently, prior to that, it was the Red Canadian Ensign. Even many of our provinces have the Union Jack on it, ie The flag of British Columbia.

We are independent but hold close ties to Britain.
