= 50 + 65

Because the " - " sign is outside of the brackets it really means -1(-65) which means -1 x -65 and a negative times a negative is always a positive. So then -1 x -65 = 65 and so 50 - (-65) = 50 + 65 = 115.

When you multiply by a negative you are really multiplying by -1 and every time you multiply by -1 it changes the sign of whatever you're multiplying. So if you take a positive number say 37 and multiply it by -1, you get -37. If you multiply it again by -1 you get 37, so -1(-1x37) = -(-37) = 37, so changing the sign twice leaves the number unchanged. Also, -(-(-37)) = -(37) = -37. Basically whenever you see - - it changes to +.

You just have to remember the following rules when dealing with negative numbers:

1) A negative times a negative equals a positive. eg. -5 x -7 = 35.

2) A negative times a positive equals a negative. eg. -10 x 4 = -40, eg2. -3 x 6 = -18.

3) A positive times a positive equals a positive. eg. 6 x 8 = 48.

So if the signs of the 2 numbers you're multiplying are the same then the answer will be positive, if they are different the answer will be negative. Same rules apply for division.
