We could help you to book cheap hotels, cheap hotels in Japan cost pretty much the same as capsule hotel, and it's definitely better. But it's difficult for people who don't speak japanese to book it, coz bookings are all made in japanese.

So, let us know and we could help you to book, and we only charge USD10 per booking (hot spring hotel cost a bit more though).

We could also give you many advices on how to travel in Japan on a low budget.

Capsule hotels can be trouble for a few reasons:
1) Not all store luggage, you need to make sure they do.
2) Not all cater to male and female guests so check first if you need to.
3)Capsule hotels often have rules in regards to behavior and can be reluctant to accept foreigners.

The simple answer to how much money to bring is as much as you can. Prices are similar to most other large US and european cities. Hotel + $50/day I would think would be a minimum to avoid starvation/boredom.

If you have 3-4 of you it might be similar cost to all split the cost of a budget hotel as compared to each staying in a capsule.

Getting a JR rail pass or a prepaid fare card to avoid having to calculate your fare using the map and automated ticket vending machines makes life easier.
