This sentence is copy from a book :


When they'd reached the top, they went to see Atoll Reef.


they'd = they would

After " would " , using "bare infinitive"
So, it should be " reach "


Why this sentence using "reached" ?

they'd = they would / they had

In this case, they'd =they had.

Reconstructing the sentence, it is
"when they had reached the top ,they went to see Atoll Reef."

Past prefect tense is used here.
i.e. had+past participle

So, the meaning is that after they had reached the top, they then went to see Atoll Reef.
