What would you do in Vancouver/Whistler?

I live in Northern Washington, and my parents and older siblings are visiting me in late July. We plan on staying at the Hyatt in Downtown Vancouver for a couple of nights, and I am in charge of finding things to do. My mother cannot walk long distances as she has MS, and my siblings are all older (20+). Any suggestions?

P.S. We are also staying in Whistler for a couple of nights, so any ideas there would be great as well.

Thanks!

Hi from a former Vancouverite, now living in Seattle. The suggestions below are great, but if your mother can't walk much (my mother in law's the same), I wouldn't recommend some of the major things like long hikes or suspension bridge unless you are able to get a stroller or wheelchair for her. The walks are wonderful, but very long. Depending on how mobile she is, the ferry ride to Victoria is so beautiful, but if you only have a couple nights, it's not really on the top of the list. The ride up to Whistler would be, however, and in the town itself, there are lots of little shops and cafes with plenty of benches to take short rests. As you drive up, take more time to stop off and enjoy the scenery which is breathtaking, esp. if the weather's good. There is a lovely waterfall called Bridal Falls (or maybe Shannon Falls; I always mix them up) with a picnic area located between Squamish and Whistler which is visible from the picnic site and the older siblings could hike up while your mother rests. If you are traveling on a Sunday, there's a great golf course called, "Furry Creek" which, I'm told, has a great brunch buffet. Here's their website: http://www.golfbc.com/courses/furry_creek/clubhouse/dining
Another beautiful scenic place for meals en route to or from Whistler is the Salmon House on the Hill with gorgeous views and good food to match (http://www.salmonhouse.com/). A favorite within Vancouver itself is Seasons in the Park, located in Queen Elizabeth Park. If your mother's a gardener, this is the place to be. This is also where the Clinton/Yeltsin summit was held in 1994. The gardens are beautiful, all naturally formed, with a little waterfall and flowers in and outside of the MacMillan Bloedel Conservatory. The highest point in Vancouver, it's also very accessable for seniors. Those are my ideas. Have a great trip!

here are some tips and suggestions:

go to Stanley Park!!!
you can hike, bike, just lay down on the grass, have picnic and basically, do just about anything there!!!!
the place is truly AMAZING!!!

There's the Brockton Point Lighthouse, Totem Poles and Prospect Point, where you could have a great view of the Lions Gate Bridge and Grouse Mountain from the top of Prospect Point.

You might also want to consider going to Cypress Mountain and watch the beautiful sunset from there. It's only 30 minutes away from the heart of downtown Vancouver.
It also offers one of the best ski resorts in town!!!

It'll aslo be fun to visit Gastown's Historical Steamclock, which was designed and built by Ray Saunders in 1977. It belches steam and hoots out the famous Westminster chimes "Big Ben" theme!!! i love it!!!

you could also spend a perfect day at Granville Island.
Granville Island lies below the Granville Street bridge. The public market has everything you need and the island also offers lots of places to dine.

You could also bring your dog and jog on the beach of Vancouver Downtown.
the beach is not good for swimming but it's really nice to see in Downtown.

You should also dine at THE EATERY... The Funkiest place for Japanese food indeed!
hehehe yum yum!!!

Walk around the structure of Canada Place to get a good panoramic view of the city!!!
fantastic!!!

Don't miss the Capilano Suspension bridge too!!!
It is said to be Vancouver's oldest tourist attraction, which was originally built in 1889.
It stretches 450 feet (137m) across and 230 feet (70m) above the Capilano River.

Go and visit the Lighthouse Park too, if you have more time.
It contains the largest uncut, coastal-elevation trees in the Lower Mainland, which a spectacular view!!! This is within a 10-minute walk of the parking lot.

Also, ride a ferry (about an hour and a half) going to Victoria Island to complete your Vancouver experience!
It is said to be the vacation capital of Canada.

Go to the Parliament building to have a good view of marina; then, have a tea break at the Fairmont Empress Hotel. It is one of Victoria's highlights, with its true British tradition and atmosphere!!!

Before going back to the city, have a soup and salad at Pagliacci's, which is very popular to the locals for is great pasta, desserts, and wonderful ambiance!!!
