What is the relationship between domain names and web pages?

2008-06-24 2:25 am
I purchased a non-template website, but the seller refuses to give me the passwords to the domain name, which is what I thought I was buying. So I ended up with a website that I cannot access or use since I do not have any password information nor domain name. Are they not the same? I am looking for any information that ties the two together as I dispute this issue.

A domain name is a name for your website that people can access by the address bar.

A webpage is the actual coded website file that you must upload to the internet to be viewed.

A web hosting service is a type of Internet hosting service that allows individuals and organizations to provide their own website accessible via the World Wide Web.

The best one is bluehost webhosting since they offer unlimited bandwidth and free domain with their webhosting package.I also like the fact that on every signup they give you $100 credits to advertise your website with the google & yahoo search engines for free.

A website is the html, css, shtml, asp, etc files that are used by a web browser to display a given set of pages on a domain. Websites are hosted on servers and "pointed to" by domain names.

The domain itself is the hostname that is used to represent an ip address that points to a location where the files are hosted. It is the domain name that is used by your computer to determine what web site is displayed for a given request.

Basically it works like this:

you view files in a web browser at an address that is the domain name, but the two are actually not the same thing.

Hopefully that isn't too convoluted.

I will try to keep it very simple. A web server will have an IP address. Each website which is hosted on the web server in question will have its own IP address. It is also possible for the web server example to share an IP address with a hosted website. DNS is nothing more than a "translation" between a (sub) domain name and an IP address. Does this clear things up for you?

As you may know Domain is just a name, not a real website. If you are going to create a website:

1- Buy a domain name.
2- Buy a web hosting service to provide your online space and enable you to get your website online at your purchased domain name.

If you want to start your website I recommend purchase your domain and hosting together. In this way it is possible to get your domain for free. Some hosting services offer this gift today.

As an experienced webmaster I recommend BlueHost service which I’m sure it would work for you and fulfill all your requirements. They have a really great offer for hosting & I have used them for over 3 yrs now, and have never had a single problem with them.

They are a Multi-awarded Web Hosting which offer a Full-featured service only $6.95 a month. You can go there through the address below:

In simpliest terms, domain name is the actual "name.com". The domain name is registered with the registry and you would have access to a WHOIS record.

Website is the "www" part. The "www" part is the files that make up the page you see in your browser including text, images, etc.

In order to use the "www" part, you will need a domain name. You can certainly take the files and use it on another domain name.

So, the question you need to figure out is, did you buy the files, or did you buy the actual domain name.

If you bought the actual domain name, there should've been a domain registrant transfer process initiated/completed.

If you want, email me and I can help you find out more about the domain name/website problem.

Dfinitions:

1.) Domain name = www.yourdomain.com [ This is used to access your website
2.) Website = Factors are domain name, web host / storage and design /template
3.) Web Space / Storage = The storage of your files where the page, video, images etc resides

yes you may solicit the username and password for the domain manager. that is your right since you bought it. But you also have to get a web space for the domain :) The web space will also have it's own username and password for the so called "CONTROL PANEL" where you might manage your site :)

A domain name is a name for your website that people can access by the address bar.

eg. http://www.yahoo.com <-- domain name
http://www.billiam.weebly.com <-- subdomain, part of weebly.com domain name

A "webpage" is the actual coded website file that you must upload to the internet to be viewed.

However, if you get the webpage file, and upload it to the internet, you can register a domain name for the webpage file that you purchased.
