(2x + 8)/(x + 4)
= 2(x + 4)/(x + 4) (cancel out x + 4)
= 2/1
= 2

(2x + 8)/(x + 4)

Take a common factor of 2 out of the numerator:

[2(x + 4)/(x + 4)] = 2*(1/1) = 2

Since this is only an expression and not an equality, there is no solution. It could or could not be 2, depending on what the expression is set equal to

2(x-4)
-------== 2 because (x-4) cancel out.
(x-4)

Nope:

2x + 8 = 2(x + 4)

When you divide by (x + 4), all you are left with is 2.
