How long should I crate my puppy at night?

My little puppy is 6 months old and I just failed on paper training her and now I started crate training her. It works great, she could poop 10 mins right after she eats. I want to know how many hour can I crate her at night? I usually sleep 9-10 hours everynight but now I need to wake up 1 or 2 hours earlier to release her coz I'm so worry that she can't hold the pee/poo anymore. Also, after I release her and give her food, should I wait there til she eliminates or I could just put the paper on the floor and she will understand? (I want her to poop on the paper no matter indoor or outdoor)

Our pup is only in about 6 hours. (I go to bed late an my husband gets up early) If we are longer than that, she will wake us up to go potty. We just let her out and put her back.

If there a reason you are offering food at night? Did I misunderstand? If you do, then yes, you need to wait for her to go. It's like having a baby in the house. It will get better with time.

Congrats and good luck!

Crates make housetraining simple. Because dogs don't like to pee or poop where they sleep and eat, they'll hold it when they're in their crate. Pop your dog in his crate whenever you're not with him, and he won't have any accidents in the house--this prevents a bad habit from forming. Take him out for bathroom breaks regularly, and he's more likely to eliminate outdoors--this helps him learn a good habit.

I just got my puppy shes 8 weeks old I put her in the crate and she freaked crying all night so I took her out and made her sleep wit me . I tried the next night she did the same thing, But i have been taking her out every time she eats till she goes to the washroom and about every 40 mins during the day . plus right away when she wakes up with me and goes to bed. Now I have had her for just about a week and she probably only peed in the house 3 times and never a poo which i think is pretty good shes learning real fast. I think u need to make them understand its a NONO right away instead of putting them in a crate and making her sleep in her own p*ss and poo untill ur ready to get up...

Well when we crate trained my puppy we put paper inside her crate so if she needs to go she would go on it. And plus she lets us know by whining or barking. Do not feed her in the middle of the night, that could make her go more often.

And also put paper inside during the day so that she goes on it and teach her to go on it.

Hope this helps :D

I successfully crate train all my toy poodle pups before they go home.

Philosophy is that the crate is a "crib". Pup starts the day by leaving the crate and going straight out to potty. Eats breakfast and then again out to potty.

At six months give the pup about 1 hour of free floor time; then supervise closely; taking out every 30 minutes or so. Crate again when the pup is slowing down. Put into the crate with a nice bone and a few toys; perhaps this is his cookie for the morning. Crating of a dog this age should not be more than 2 to 3 hours. If you are home; let him sleep and as soon as he wakes take him out again. When there is a pee/poop let him have some fun again on floor with supervision.

When he tires back to bed. So, start your day with poop, eat, poop, floor time, crate for napping/rest; potty; floor time; crate again; potty; floor time....After dinner have a fun time with him when he is his busiest. Usually about 8 pm...at 9:30 or so; crate for evening. He will crate longer and stay clean if he is in the same room with you. There is your 9 hours. Otherwise in another room, he will wake and want to know where you are; thus you will get 7-8 hours...

be consistent; remember not to put into the crate unless you mean it and be sure that he has gone to the bathroom before crating for the evening.

I think I would only crate her for about 6-8 hours at night. Your dog will eventually get on the same schedule as you. If she does make a mess during the night don't worry about it. Just clean it up and make sure she is getting potty trained during your awake hours.

I myself do not believe in crating. I know it works for many others. I am too soft hearted, can't do it. Anyway, my friend did crate her pup and the longest he would be in it at night would be 5 or 6 hours. Good luck.
