As a rule of thumb, 10^5 is just 100000, where the 5 is just how many zeros. For a negative number, 10^-5, you count the decimal places back from 1.0, so you get .00001, if you jump the decimal point 5 times, you get 1.0 back. Scientific notation always starts with the decimal point after the first number for example, 3.67, or 1.23. 123 is just 1.23 x 10^2, moving the decimal point 2 times to the right.
