The Wife Cake (Chinese Pastry) is traditional pastries in Guangdong and Hong Kong . It is round with a crispy surface, while inside is winter melon hibiscus. It is not greasy and best for taste when it is hot. There were many stories of the origin of the Wife Cake. One of which was that was the wife of a poor family using winter melon hibiscus as stuffing to make the circular cake, and the husband sold them in downtown, and the cake was well accepted by the people. That was why the husband named the cake “The Wife Cake” to thank his wife. Another story was that the cake was first introduced by a restaurant in Guangzhou which called Lian Xiang Lou. The restaurant invited a famous Chaozhou dessert cook to the restaurant. The cook brought his wife to Guangzhou and the wife brought with her a local common cake. After everyone in the restaurant tasted it, they liked it very much and so they promote this new dessert and named it as “The Wife Cake”.

The “wife cake” is a kind of Guangdong traditional pastries. You can easily find it here in Hong Kong in some traditional Chinese cake shops. It is flat, circle-shaped with a fragrant crispy surface. Inside it is some winter melon hibiscus and it is not greasy.

There are many fables about its origin. One of them is that in ancient times, there was a poverty-stricken couple. The wife made some cakes stuffed with winter melon hibiscus and his husband took them to the downtown for hawking. They turned out to be very welcome. The husband then named the cake after her wife as the “wife cake” to thank her effort.

Another fable is that the “wife cake” was first made by Guangzhou Lianxianglou, who was one of the chaozhous’ skilled dessert makers. He took some self-made winter melon cakes made by her wife back to his restaurant at his hometown for his fellow workers to taste. The other workers all praised them to be greatly delicious. Therefore, Lianxianglou further improved them and promoted the sales. As they were made by the Chaozhou skilled workers’ wife, then they were named as the “wife cake”.

The "wife cake" is kind traditional pastry originated from Guangdong and now found in Hong Kong. It has a round shape with crispy crust and a soft sweet filling made from crushed winter melon. When asked to tell why they like the snack so much, people may tell you it is because of the "crispy skin, with the filling that is sweet but not too rich".
The origin of the snack comes with a story about a couple who lived in poverty in the old days. The wife made cakes with winter melon filling for her husband to sell in the market. The snack became popular. The husband then gave the snack an eye-catching new name, known as the "wife's cake", in honour of the contribution of his wfe.
Another story goes that the snack originated from a bakery in Guangzhou known as Lian Xiang Lou. The bakery once hired a skilled cake maker from Chaozhou to work for them. The worker improved the pastries of the shop by applying a new ingredient, that was the crushed winter melon filling he brought from his home town and hand-made by his wife. It was well received and Lian Xian Lou started to make its brand of pastry with winter melon filling, and name it the "wife's cake" in honour of the contribution of the wife of the cake maker who started it all.
