Not all liver diseases will give you the appearance of yellowish skin. In fact not all people with yellow staining colour on their skin have liver diseases. Jaundice is a term that the medical person uses for the condition of yellowish skin colour. Jaundice is a sign of many different diseases but most often it is associated with either the liver or the gallbladder.
Jaundice is a condition where there is an excess amount of bilirubin in the blood. Bilirubin is a waste product of red blood cells. After a red blood cell aged and their existence is no longer efficient, all the usable components will be recycle and reused for the new red blood cell. The non-reusable part is called bilirubin. It will then be removed by the liver.
One of the most functions of the liver is to remove waste products and toxic from the blood, and bilirubin is a waste product. Once the unconjugated bilirubin enters the liver, the liver will than conjugate (adds a molecule) it and secreted into bile. It will then be eliminated with the waste of our feces. That is why our stool has the brown appearance to it.
Jaundice occurs in many different numbers of ways. Condition that can cause jaundice have 1) too many bilirubin being produced, 2) liver dysfunction that affected the process of conjugating bilirubin, 3) bile duct blockage that slow down the conjugated bilirubin elimination process.
Also, bilirubin likes elastin, thus they attach to our skin and eyes to give us that yellowish colour.
