When determining which number is bigger, first look at the largest place found in either number. For example, if you were comparing 148.3 and 149.1, you would start with the hundreds place. If they are the same, you go one place to the right (to the tens place). These are also the same (4), so we go one place to the right. Now we find a difference (9 vs. 8). The one with the larger digit is the larger number, so 149.1 is larger than 148.3.
Using this strategy, you should be able to determine that 1.4 is greater than 1.2.
