The customs of eating rice dumplings ("zongzi") and dragon boat racing in the Dragon Boat Festival (the 5th day of the 5th lunar month of the Chinese calendar) are said to be related to the rituals to commemorate the ancient scholar Qu Yuan.
Qu was an loyal official of the state of Chu, that existed during the period when China was divided into different warring states rather than ruled under a unified dynasty. Wrongfully accused, Qu killed himself by jumping into the river on the 5th day of the 5th lunar month. The attempt of locals to find him in the river on their boats was said to have evolved into the dragon boat race. Other locals filled bamboo tubes with rice and throw them into the river. They believed that this would become the food for the fish in the river so the fish would not eat the body of Qu. It is said to have evolved to the traditional of making rice dumpling with bamboo leave wrapping on the Dragon Boat Festival.
