Sodium hydroxide solution and ammonia solution are used to test for metal ions in aqueous solutions, but not the metals themselves.

Both sodium hydroxide solution and ammonia solution do not react with zinc metal. Therefore, a solution of zinc ions should be made (e.g. dissolve the zinc in dilute hydrochloric acid) before the test using sodium hydroxide solution or ammonia solution to test for the zinc ions in the solution.
