phrase 是詞組. phrase 有很多種, 例如:
1) verb phrase 動詞詞組 -

"I am reading a very interesting book" 中的 "am reading".



2) noun phrase 名詞詞組 -

"Students in this school are diligent" 中的 "students" , "this school" 及 "students in this school".



3) adjective phrase 形容詞詞組 -

"She is very pretty" 中的 "very pretty".



3) preposition phrase

"I saw her in the morning" 中的 "in the morning".



Clause 是子句. Sentence 是句子.

兩者都必須包含主語及動語, 但是一個 clause不一定是一句完整sentence, 但sentence當中最少包含一個clause.

好像很複雜, 看以下例句:

a) You will get fat.

- 這是一句完整的sentence, 亦是一個clause. 裏面包含主語 "you", 動詞 "will get".



b) You will get fat if you eat too much.

- 這也是一句完整的sentence,

但當中包含了兩個clauses, 分別是 "You will get fat" 及 "if you eat too much".

"if" 是連接詞connective, 把兩個clauses 連在一起.


一個sentence當中的clauses也有分主從, 其中能自己獨立存在的叫作 main clause, 亦即是句中的"You will get fat", 而另一clause, "if you eat too much" 本身不能作為完整的獨立sentence, 不是main clause, 稱subordinate clause. 一句sentence 當中可以有無數的subordinate clauses, 但只能得一個main clause.

我不明白的就是,怎樣才叫做not complete sense?
