以第一族的金屬鋰,鈉,鉀為例,說明同族元素具有相似的性質;並借該等金屬與水的反應,說明其性質由上至下怎樣依次漸變.

1. 同一族原素有相似的化學性質:

同一族的鉀、鈉與鹵素反應時相似:
2K+ X2 --> 2KX

2Na+ X2 --> 2NaX

2. 鉀、鈉與水反應時十分劇烈,產生熱、氫氣及金屬氫氧化鈉:
2K + 2H2O --> 2KOH + H2

2Na + 2H20 --> 2NaOH + H2

但鉀與水的反應比鈉的更加劇烈,產生的熱更多、產生氫氣的初速較高。

同一族的原素有相似化學特性;
於第一族,活性由上至下遞增。

sodium and potassium are silvery solid , they are reactive , have similar chemical properties (Reaction with water ), they can conduct electricity, by compare the reaction with water among them, potassium has a more faster and has lilac flame but sodium only has a slower and small or no flame reaction.
