Which of the following statements is/are correct?

(1)Latent heat is used to overcome the attractions between the molecules in a substance.

(2)The latent heat of a substance is the energy absorbed by the substance when it changes from solid to liquid (or from liquid to gas) without a change of temperature.

(3)The specific latent heat depends on the volume of the body.

Answer: (1) and (2) only are correct.

But why?

There is nothing known as [specific latent heat] in thermodynamics.
The latent heat of a substance already specifies the heat required to change the state of [per unit mass] of the substance.

The correctness of statements (1) and (2) is obvious as latent heat would increase the potential energy of molecules of the substance, thus increasing their molecular separation against the attractive intermolecular force.
