Question:
(3/4)p - 5 = -17
Answer:
(3/4)p = -12 .......add 5 to both sides
p = -12*(4/3)......multiply both sides by (4/3)
p = -16........ simplify

Or did you mean...
Question:
3/(4p) - 5 = -17
Answer:
3/(4p) = -12......... add 5 to both sides
3 = (-12)(4p)...... multiply both sides by 4p
3 = -48p........... simplify
p = -3/48....... divide by -48 both sides

3/4p=-17+5
3/4p=-12
3/4p*4=-12*4
3p=-48
3p/3=-48/3
p=-16

I think so... just check.

3/4 p -5 = -17
3p /4 = -12
3p = -48
p = -16
2008-06-09 2:14 am
p(3/4) - 5 = -17
3p/4 - 5 = -17
3p/4 = -17 + 5
3p = 4(-12)
3p = -48
p = -48/3
p = -16

If you are trying to solve for p, you first need to get rid of the -5. In order to do that, you add 5 to both sides. So now you have:

3/4 p = -12

Now, in order to get rid of the 3/4 from the p, you multiply it by its reciprocal (which would be 4/3). Since you do that to one side, you must do it to the other side. Therefore, your answer is:

p = -16.

You can go back and plug in the answer to see if it works:

3/4(-16) - 5 = -17
-12 - 5 = -17
-17=-17

Therefore, p = -16 is correct.

3/4 p - 5 = -17

3/4p = -12

3 = -48 p

p = -1/16
