4(2a+3) - (a-5)
There is a rule called the BIDMAS rule. this is basically a rule to help us remember what we should do first when simplifying or solving an algebraic equation.
B - brackets
I - indices
D - division
M - multiplication
A - addition
S - subtraction
so first open up the brackets, then expand any indices, then divide, multiply and finally add and subtract.
In your problem 4(2a+3) - 1(a-5)
NOTE: i've added a -1 before the second bracket so we dont forget that we should multiply that bracket as well.
we start with the brackets (remember brackets is multiplication by all terms in the brackets):
Therefore 4*2a + 4*3 -1*a + (-1)*(-5)
Then just multiply:
8a + 12 - a +5
Finally add and subtract like terms:
7a +17
