Chicken run is an animation about a bunch of hens on a concentration-camp style coop. Led by the plucky Ginger, they must escape before Mr. and Mrs. Tweedy turn them into chicken pies when they do not meet their egg quota.
Chicken Run is fast and funny, heartbreaking and hair-raising. The sidekicks, including the naive Babs and two rodents provide many hilarious moments. It uses all the classic elements of the prison-break movie: secret plans, fanciful inventions built from scrap, repeated failures and indomitable spirits. There are many parodies of adventure and prison-break classics and if you know the films you will get a good crackle.
The painstaking animation, done by moving clay models in miniscule amounts over time, is a remarkable labour of love, especially in this day and age of computer graphics. The set design and lighting are also executed perfectly to match the mood.
The characters in the movie, especially Ginger, are highly endearing. Besides being an entertaining comedy, the movie sheds light on the plight of hens on an egg farm. It points to the evilness of farm factory and through laughters, generated compassion in us for the little animals. After watching the movie, I decided that I will go buy free-range eggs and to eat less chicken.
