Mary was going to carry out an experiment for the crystallization of a solid X. She looked up information for X in the internet and got the following data:
Solubility of X in 100 g of water at 60oC = 48.6 g
Solubility of X in 100 g of water at 25oC = 27.3 g
Mary designed the experiment as follow:
(1)50.0 g of water was transferred to a beaker.
(2)30.0 g of solid X was added to the beaker.
(3)The mixture was heated to 60oC, and then filtered at the same temperature.
(4)The solution was cooled to 25oC.
After the completion of the experimental steps, Mary got crystals of X by filtering the mixture obtained in step 4.

Answer the following question:

(a)Calculate the mass of crystals of X obtained in the experiment.

answer:24.3-13.7 = 10.6 (g)

in 50cm3 of water at 60 degree celsius,
the maximum amount of X dissolved = 48.6/2=24.3g
when the solution is cooled to 25 degree celsius,
the amount amount of X dissolved =27.3/2=13.7g
so the amount of crystal obtained =24.3-13.7=10.6g

In (3), mass of X left in filtrate = 48.6x0.5(only 50g water)
= 24.3g
In(4), mass of X left in residue = mass of X in (3)filtrate - solubilityX in 25oC in 50g water
= mass of crystal
= 24.3 - 27.3x0.5(only 50g water)
= 24.3 - 13.65
= 10.6g
