1. Get all the terms with the unknown (variable) on one side of the equation, and constants/integers/numbers on the other. For your equation, you only have to subtract 'x' from both sides of the equation.

5/8x + 1/16x - x = 5/16

2. Now, using the Distributive Property of expressions---you know, where ax + bx + cx = (a + b + c) * x, group the coefficients of x:

(5/8 + 1/16 - 1) * x = 5/16

3. Use your knowledge of summing fractions---you know, get the denominator where everything is the same denominator

(10/16 + 1/16 - 16/16) * x = 5/16

4. And do the summing:

-5/16 * x = 5/16

5. You now finish by solving for x, which means multiplying by -16/5 on both sides of the equation:

x = -16/5 * 5/16 = -1

and you have your answer

a million-initially group the x words in one factor: 5/8x+a million/16x-x=5/sixteen 2-you're able to sum the coeffient of x: 10/16x+a million/16x-sixteen/sixteen=5/sixteen -5/16x=5/sixteen to locate the fee of x multiply the two factors with -sixteen/5 x=-a million

x(5/8) + x(1/16) = 5/16 + x
5x/8 + x/16 = 5/16 + x
16(5x/8 + x/16) = 16(5/16 + x)
10x + x = 5 + 16x
11x + 16x = 5
27x = 5
x = 5/27
