Places far away from the sea are very hot in summer but very cold in winter. They have a great annual range of temperature.In China, for example, coastal areas receive more preciptation because the onshore summer monsoon brings water vapour from the ocean nearby to the continent. However, the summer monsoon cannot reach the provinces in the interior part of China like Xinjiang or Xizang. Therefore they are drier than coastal areas.

The rainfall decreases from the coast to the inland because the onshore rain near the coast favours rainfall.
