Imagine you have a copper container and a silver container of the same mass. When equal amount of hot water is poured into the two containers , which one of them is more likely to gain a larger amount of energy? Explain your answer briefly. The specific heat capacities of copper and silver are 390 J kg^-1 度^-1 and 230 J kg^-1 度^-1 respectively.

and the answer is Copper...why?
isnt it the same?

Assume no energy loss to the surroundings, let the mass of both containers be m kg.
By the formula : E = mc△T, for the same temperature rise,
E( copper ) = m ( 390 )( △T )
= 390m△T J
E( silver ) = m ( 230 )( △T )
= 230m△T J
Hence E ( copper ) > E ( silver ).

I think you want to ask: If water of same initial temperature is heated to the same final temp., which one will gain more energy? If so, then copper is the answer, as shown above.

However, if it is not, then there will be no answers to the Q, as 2 variables exist:
1) △T of the containers
2) △T of the water

So plx feel free to ask in case you are in doubt.
