A faulty liquid-in-glass thermometer reads 2度 and 98度 when it is immersed in pure melting ice and pure boiling water respectively. Assuming that the length of the liquid column increases linearly with the temperature , find

a) the real temperature when the thermometer reads 40度

b) the reading of the thermometer when the real temperature is -10度

answer :39.6度
& -7.6度

Let T be the real temperature
and t be the reading on the faulty thermometer

Using proportion,
T/100 = (t-2)/(98-2)

i.e. T = (100/96)x(t-2)

(a) when t = 40 deg,C
T = (100/96)x(40-2) degC = 39.6 degC

(b) When T = -10 degC
-10 = (100/96)(t-2)
solve for t gives t = - 7.6 deg.C

a)
100 x (40 - 2)/(98 - 2) = 39.58

b)
- (10/100 x (98 - 2) - 2) = -7.6
