Let T be the real temperatureand t be the reading on the faulty thermometer
Using proportion,
T/100 = (t-2)/(98-2)
i.e. T = (100/96)x(t-2)
(a) when t = 40 deg,C
T = (100/96)x(40-2) degC = 39.6 degC
(b) When T = -10 degC
-10 = (100/96)(t-2)
solve for t gives t = - 7.6 deg.C
